Greetings from Greece,
I can't believe how much these little travelers have grown. No more stumbling around, these guys are up on all fours, found their footing. They are learning how to walk, hop, jump and play bow. They are very aware of their fellow litter mates and have begun to enjoy their version of play. Ears, noses, tail and toes are all fair game for lots of mouthing and chewing. Even Amarula is a victim to their short bursts of activity.
A couple have also found their voices. For about a week they do what I call ‘trilling’ which is sort of a cross between a whimper, whine, growl, and bark. They seem to be very confused about where those strange noises are coming from!!
These travelers now have their eyes wide open and their ears stay flopped down all the time so they took like the hounds they are. Their ridges have begun to be less fuzzy so soon we will be able to really tell exactly what they look like.
This is the last week in the whelping box at it's starting to appear smaller. The next step is to convert their area to a 3 area puppy pen (sleeping, playing and potty) At one end of the playpen is the ‘puppy litter box’ where they will learn that there is an appropriate place to go to the bathroom. I fill the pan with paper litter pellets and surround the area with potty pads, we eventually make the potty pad area smaller and smaller until they are going in just one section. Hopefully, this process will make it MUCH easier to housebreak your puppy later. I also add an area where only Amarula can go so that she can get away from them once in awhile to get a break but where she can also see them at all times.
We have completed the Early Neurological Stimulation Exercises on day 19, so now we just continue to play and cuddle with them as they become their own little selves. At five weeks we add more stimulation tools, but until then it's pretty low key and full of snuggling.
Note: I don't want to jinx myself but this is the quietest litter I have every had and that makes everyone happy and stress free!
